The process is well controlled. <span style=\"color: #00b500;\"><strong>It refers to the sterilization of reusable medical devices<\/strong><\/span> in healthcare centers and hospitals.<\/p><p><span style=\"color: #00b500;\"><strong>In addition to its high energy consumption, it presents a danger of explosion and burns.<\/strong><\/span> Recent questions have been raised about its effectiveness in certain long and narrow lights. Above all, such temperatures damage many heat-sensitive materials. They can thus <span style=\"color: #00b500;\"><strong>process a wider range of materials<\/strong><\/span>.<\/p><p>Ionizing rays sterilize by transferring energy to the molecules they pass through. They <span style=\"color: #00b500;\"><strong>thus damage the components of the cells they pass through<\/strong><\/span>, creating lesions that can cause cell death if the dose is high enough.<\/p><p>Sterilization with ionizing radiation must therefore be implemented with the <span style=\"color: #00b500;\"><strong>precautions that apply to nuclear activities<\/strong><\/span>. Ionizing rays can cause skin burns, vomiting and internal pain. <span style=\"color: #00b500;\"><strong>In the long term they increase the risk of cancer.<\/strong><\/span><\/p><p>The most common ionizing sterilant is Cobalt 60. It accounts for 40% of cold sterilization of medical devices worldwide. This cobalt isotope is obtained by exposure of this metal in the heart of certain nuclear reactors.<\/p><p>In a sterilization plant, the source of Co<sub>60<\/sub> is isolated from its surroundings by thick concrete walls. Indeed, the gamma rays of Cobalt 60 are able to cross consistent thicknesses.<\/p><p><span style=\"color: #00b500;\"><strong>Irradiation has the effect of altering the polymer chains.<\/strong><\/span> This is an effect that can be desired in modifying materials. With some protection (gloves and goggles) to avoid skin burns and a desorption phase so as not to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sf2s-sterilisation.fr\/congres-conferences\/5eme-congres-de-la-sf2s-lyon-2021\/2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">harm the patient<\/a>, one can quite simply mitigate its toxicity.<\/p><p><span style=\"color: #00b500;\"><strong>This is not the case with ethylene oxide (C<sub>2<\/sub>H<sub>4<\/sub>O), explosive, irritant, carcinogenic and mutagenic.<\/strong><\/span><\/p><p>Still used for hospital sterilization in some countries, <span style=\"color: #00b500;\"><strong>it was banned for this use in European hospitals<\/strong><\/span> 10 years ago. It is now <span style=\"color: #00b500;\"><strong>reserved for industrial sterilization<\/strong><\/span>, i.e. contract sterilization of single-use medical devices.<\/p><p>It has, however, come under <span style=\"color: #00b500;\"><strong>increased scrutiny<\/strong><\/span> since 2019, when the US Environment Agency <a href=\"https:\/\/news.wttw.com\/2019\/02\/15\/illinois-epa-shuts-down-sterigenics-willowbrook\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">shut down<\/a> two ethylene oxide sterilization plants in the US, following environmental releases, considered to be a threat to the health of local residents.
